Understanding Medicare and referrals
You do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, to be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate you will need to obtain a referral from a GP.
For women with a current or recent pregnancy (within the last 12 months), a rebate of $68.45 is available for up to three perinatal counselling sessions. A referral is required from a GP.
Psychology sessions can form part of a Chronic Disease Management Plan. With a GP referral, a rebate of $58.30 is available for up to five sessions per calendar year.
Medicare rebates can also be claimed with a GP assessment and referral specific to the treatment of eating disorders. A rebate of $137.05 is available for up to 40 sessions per calendar year.
